Getting Started with FamilyCodex

Step 1: Download & Upload

Download FamilyCodex and upload it to your web server.

• Extract the ZIP file to your web directory (e.g., public_html)
• Ensure PHP 8.1+ is installed on your server
• Make the data/ directory writable (chmod 777)

Step 2: Log In as Administrator

Use the default admin account to access your site.

1. Go to yoursite.com/ in your browser
2. Click "Login" and use the default credentials:

Step 3: Activate Your License

Enter your license key to unlock all features.

1. Log in with your admin account
2. Navigate to Settings → License
3. Enter your license key (found in your purchase email)
4. Click "Activate License"

Step 4: Add Your First Family Members

Start building your family tree by adding individuals.

• Click "Add Individual" from the dashboard
• Enter basic information (name, birth date, etc.)
• Add relationships (parents, spouses, children)
• Upload photos and documents
• Create events (births, marriages, etc.)

Step 5: Import Existing Data (Optional)

Already have family tree data? Import it easily!

• Export your data from your previous software as GEDCOM (.ged)
• Go to Tools → Import GEDCOM
• Upload your .ged file
• Review and confirm the import

Step 6: Invite Family Members

Collaborate with family to build your tree together.

• Go to Users → Add User
• Enter family member's email and assign a role (Viewer/Editor/Admin)
• They'll receive an invitation email with login instructions
• Free tier: Up to 3 users | Pro tier: Unlimited users
