Learn how to use FamilyCodex
Getting Started
FamilyCodex is a private family tree platform that helps you explore and preserve your family history. You can view family connections, timelines, photos, and stories all in one place.
- Use the sidebar to browse individuals and families
- Click on any person's name to view their profile
- Use the Family Tree view for a visual representation
- Use the search bar in the top navigation to find specific people
Each profile shows:
- Basic information (birth, death, age)
- Family relationships (parents, siblings, spouse, children)
- Timeline of life events
- Photos and media
- Biography and stories
- Grandchildren and extended family
Features Guide
Use Ctrl + K (or Cmd + K on Mac) to quickly open the search. Type a name to find people instantly. Use arrow keys to navigate results and Enter to select.
The interactive family tree shows relationships visually. You can:
- Zoom in/out with mouse wheel or buttons
- Drag to pan around the tree
- Click any person to center on them
- Double-click to view their full profile
Photos can be attached to individual profiles. Editors can upload new photos, set profile pictures, and add captions. The homepage carousel shows random family photos.
Each profile has a timeline showing important life events in chronological order, including births, marriages, deaths, and other milestones. Family events (like children's births) are also included.
Privacy & Security
Living individuals are automatically protected. Anonymous visitors see blurred photos and "LIVING" badges instead of names. Only registered family members can view full details of living people.
Access depends on your site settings. Typically, basic information is visible to visitors, but detailed information about living people requires login. Only approved family members can register for accounts.
Contact a family administrator to report errors or request corrections. If you're an editor, you can make changes directly through the profile editing interface.
